When we talk about the great artists and their artwork, the name of Van Gogh instantly come into our minds. Vincent Van Gogh was a great post- impressionist Dutch painter who was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot Zundert, Netherlands. Despite his great art work focusing nature, beauty, colors and emotions, he remained unknown throughout his life.

His father was an austere country minister while his mother loved colors, drawings, and nature which was transferred to his son. The family was financially unstable, so Van Gogh was forced to leave school at the age of 15. At that time, he spoke English, German and French. His favorite time was when he visited art galleries and was highly inspired by the writings of Charles Dickens and George Eliot.

After the rejection of the landlady’s daughter to whom he had fallen in love, he went into depression and melancholy. He decided to devote his life to the church where he started preaching. In the fall of 1880, Van Gogh decided to become an artist and in 1885 without getting any art teachings, he painted his masterpiece painting ‘Potato Eaters’. Despite the incredible artwork, evocative nature of the painting, this painting did not receive any attention and was not successful until after his death.

He moved to Paris where he was highly inspired by the impressionist art that was full of colors and light. He was always inspired by the nature and beauty which could be seen clearly in his paintings. After Rembrandt, he was considered the greatest Dutch painter.

In a short time of only a decade, he created 2100 art works, and 860 oil paintings. Most of these artworks were made in the last two years of his life in France. His beautiful landscapes, portraits and self portraits depicted his amazing talent of brushwork that later laid foundations of the modern art. Because of the poverty and mental illness, he died on 27, July 1890 at the young age of 37.

He was the creator of ‘the starry night’, the great masterpiece in the history of art which had and is still inspiring artists all over the world. He had the capability to capture the essence of the night as he said, life starts at night. The sad part is that his worth and his countless talents were recognized after his death.

He was declared the greatest Dutch painter and his paintings became the most expensive in the world. The tragedy with the most significant painter of all times is that his artwork was released after 100 years of his death. Recently, in 2013, another one of his beautiful landscape painting was unveiled entitled “Sunset at Montmajour” by the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.
