A Tale of Two Cities

 

A Tale of two cities was written in 1859 by Charles Dickens. A tale of two cities was his one of the best books which was written before and during the French revolution. The novel shows the cruelties and the extent of demoralization of French aristocratic with the peasants and how that leads to revolution.

The novel has a deep opening with his famous lines showing the French Revolution, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, and it was the age of foolishness…”

The novel rotates with the events in Paris and London during the revolution. The book shows us the how thecruelties were inflicted towards the peasants and the poor by the autocrats, and despite all the efforts and sacrifices which peasants made, the French revolution ended without any positive results. But it had quite a place in the pages of history and it was the start of a new era in the times of France. Even the poets like Words Worth wrote poems about this revolution with a positive hope.

 

 

About a prisoner Doctor Manette

The book is about a prisoner Doctor Manette, a noble man threw him to prisoner for no reason but after many years, when the French revolution started, they took out the doctor from the prisoner.

But until then, that noble man was no more alive, so they decided to punish his grandson Charles Darnay. They put Charles in prisoner, but his friend Sydney Carton who was a bad reputed but a very talented English lawyer fought for the Charles Darnay.

In the mean while, the daughter of Doctor Manette fall in love with Charles Darnay, and the lawyer also starts loving the same girl. But nevertheless, he keeps fighting for the freedom and life of Charles Darnay, and makes many sacrifices to save his friend and love as well. The book has a typical but quite emotional ending and it reveals loyalty, friendship and the true essence of love.

 

This is a book where the author has explained a lot about the brutalities of French revolution, and then love, friendship and the frustration in the people.

 

 

No doubt a magnificent book

The Tale of Two Cities is one of the most knownbooks by an outstanding writer Charles Dickens. I dare not to talk bad about it, But besides the French revolution, the side story of the two men falling in love with a girl, and a man making so many sacrifices for his friend and love is a kind of a cliché and I couldn’t get myself to like that part very much. Other than that, it is no doubt a magnificent book.
